To help keep our spirits up and our words flowing, we’re sharing Muse and the Marketplace keynote talks and special event videos from GrubStreet’s past in a series called “From the Grub Archive.” This week, we’re sharing a Muse and the Marketplace video from 2018.
Keeping up the Muse and the Marketplace tradition of tackling “third rail” topics in our keynotes, this spirited, button-pushing discussion from 2018 among four critically and commercially successful writers – Steve Almond, Jenna Blum, Alexander Chee, and Mitchell Zuckoff – focused on money. Long before #publishingpaidme, they discussed equity, getting paid in “exposure,” how to build a brand without going broke, the scarcity mentality, and many other provocative topics. Sorche Fairbank provided an agent’s perspective and kept the conversation focused on issues that all writers need to face but often are too shy to discuss with each other.
